Inside the temple,
amid bell-peals, flower-petals, and incense-smoke,
people to the Unseen offer their prayers:
prayers for wealth, health, power, or peace.
Outside the temple,
on the winding stone stairs,
beggars lie in wait
to catch their alms:
alms of food, clothes, or money.
Both in and outside the temple
we find beggars:
the ones inside very pious,
the others outside very pedestrian.
