As the Dusk Dawns in the West

( To Nisha, the Night, with Lots of Love and Tears)

As the dusk dawns in the west
I await with bated breath

The Night to fall.

Leaving a trail of stars in the sky
Gently, gingerly, down the steps of heavens

She descends
With dreams and sleep in each of her hands.

Wordlessly I welcome her
With my eyes closed and heart open wide.

The scents of the night flowers waft around;
The sounds of the creatures of the night
Deepens the silence …

The bark of a lone dog,
The howl of a famished fox,
The hoot of an owl restless.

The cricket-cries …

The earth exudes peace,
The sky in a dreamful slumber.

Blessed are the poor of the earth
For they have the night to thank

… till the dawn breaks.
